Giving Blogging Another Go

˜

I posted my essay on the Relevance of Infographics for Practitioners of Graphics Design yesterday – one of my written assignments at the University of Newcastle last semester. It is a lengthy piece of writing, not necessarily what you would expect from a blog, but nevertheless a piece of writing I feel is relevant to the content I want to post on this site. My goal is to keep this blog focused towards my design process, thinking and discoveries as I progress as a student and designer – with both client- and University work.

This will hopefully result in being able to more efficiently document my processes and thoughts and understand what makes me tick as a designer. I’ve spent a great deal of time focusing on purely technical things (software, tutorials etc.) to understand the tools of the trade. This means that I’ve got a good understanding of HOW to bring my ideas into life. But I really never thought about WHY I solved the different tasks and jobs in that way.

The last couple of years, I felt a need to explore and learn about conceptual thinking and creative processes from a theoretical standpoint – one of the reasons for going to University in the first place. I’ve been lucky and have gotten to know a great bunch of people – fellow students, lecturers and tutors – that is kind enough to listen to me when I rant about different areas of design, challenging my statements or beliefs, offering a new perspective or down right tell me that I’m SOOOO wrong. Through these discussions and conversations I’ve learned a lot, as well as gaining a new perspective on the profession of design and an urge to find new information to further my understanding. To all of you guys – thank you! You know who you are :)

So, that’s why. Through focusing my blogging around my area of study and future profession, I’m hoping to educate myself further outside of University lectures and tutorials, discovering new material and methods/processes to be able to meet the challenge of the creative professions in 18 months time. Expect rambles about ideas and thoughts, worklogs, tidbits of visual inspiration from around the Internet and in the real world and maybe a brief book review or two.

And last, but not least, hopefully what I write here will be of interest to you guys out there, and you are more than welcome to leave comments, thoughts and ideas in the comments in my posts.

Here. We. Go.
