Thoughts, worklogs and collection of found stuff.
This in turn led me to believe that I was royally screwed. I wasn’t too concerned about the data, since I’m always plugged into my Time Machine when working at home, all my e-mails are on the servers and can be easily retrieved. But, being a student the funds are limited and I knew that the symptoms displayed was part of a fried graphics card (I’ve had the same issue on a few graphics cards on my old PC). On a MacBook, that means replacing the whole motherboard on the computer, since the graphics card is soldered directly onto the logicboard itself. In turn, that means a fair bit of money. And just a week before Uni goes back, and tuition fees are due.
I went to the local Mac shop and handed it in for diagnostics, and an hour or so later my phone rang. Expecting to get the message that the computer was FUBAR, I prepared myself for looking elsewhere for a new computer. But the message was this: “Your computer is covered by Nvidia-warranty, as this is a known problem for that model. We’ll replace your logicboard for free!”. Yes!
Today (Friday). I went and picked my MacBook up this morning, saw the bill (AU$2,103 Logicboard + AU$99 Diagnostic Fee) – NONE CHARGED. I thanked the Heavens for my good fortune and went out for a skate. I sat down 10 minutes ago to redo the work I thought I’d lost in the crash (I was that stupid, that I didn’t save the document I was working on in InDesign). Fired up InDesign, and it recovered all the documents I’d been working on, including the unsaved one! Awesome :)
On a side-note, I’ve ordered in a test-print of Smørbrød, should be here sometime next week so that I can see what to expect in terms of colour, legibility, grids and use it as a general sketch book in the process of laying out the mag. Excited!
