‘Smørbrød’ means ‘sandwhich’ in Norwegian, has a funny letter in it (Ø, pronounced like ‘Uuh’), and pretty refers all the good stuff you want neatly stacked between two slices of bread, or in this case – cover stock. There’s several reasons for choosing this name, but the main inspiration is actually Min. She’s been teaching herself Norwegian the last couple of months, and she’s found her favourite Norwegian word – ‘skinkesmørbrød’, or ‘ham sandwhich’. When she said it for the first time I thought – ‘Hey! That’s a good name for my magazine!’. Half-joking, half-serious.
Leaving it for a bit, the concept around the magazine became a bit clearer to me, and cutting out the ham, it became just ‘Smørbrød’. As mentioned above, I want to have great bacon, lettuce and tomato content, design and photography stacked neatly between two slices of toasted bread a nice cover, printed on awesome cover stock.
The main focus will obviously be design, illustration and photography, but I will also try to incorporate more lifestyle oriented content as well. The project goal is to learn the process, conceptualisation and execution by doing – and having only 13 weeks to do an issue is going to be tough. Who knows, if this thing kicks off and becomes, pffish, I don’t know, famous or something, it could become something I could do as an extra-curricular activity?
As for content, I’m still pretty blank. I’ve got some concepts and ideas in the pipeline, but I do realise that I’m going to need contributors (illustration/design/photography/writers).
