Is Infographics Relevant for Designers?

The research into the field of information graphics (infographics) is important, and should be understood by all practitioners of visual communication and graphic design. Infographics is defined as a way of visually communicating complex information quickly and clearly to an audience, for example through signs, symbols, graphs, instruction manuals or maps (Gomez-Palacio, B. & Vit A. 2009). Although the end result is essentially a graphic or an image, there are some key differences from creating a pretty picture to creating an infographic that actually works. These differences are mainly in regard to the design’s purpose being effectively conveying data or information.
